Searches of Celllar Phones and Other Electronic Devices 470

Cell phones and home assistant devices such as the Amazon Echo have become increasingly complex and now contain information such as location tracking and the ability to listen in to conversations in addition to texts, emails, and browsing history. These bills would require a warrant before law officers could search for this information. Neither the House nor Senate version made it to a vote on the chamber floor.

Inmate Conditional Medical Release 556

Prisons are often not equipped to properly care for Inmates who face terminal or debilitating illnesses and find themselves near the end of their life. This bill would allow these inmates under certain conditions a medical release in an effort to ease their pain and suffering. SB 556 passed through two committees of reference but failed to advance past the Appropriations Committee.

Controlled Substances 346

Mandatory minimums take away judicial discretion forcing judges to impose harsh sentences even if the crime doesn’t deserve one. As originally constructed, these bills would have given back that judicial discretion for certain offenses allowing judges to look at each case on its own merits. While the Senate passed SB 346 after a heavy amendment process, it did not receive a House vote.
